Seydou and Moussa, two Senegalese teenage cousins, leave their hometown Dakar to reach Italy and escape poverty, after consulting a Dakar sorcerer and against the express wish of Seydou's mother and the terrifying advice of local men.

Longing for a brighter future, two Senegalese teenagers embark on a journey from West Africa to Italy. However, between their dreams and reality lies a labyrinth of checkpoints, the Sahara Desert, and the vast waters of the Mediterranean.

The film is based on the actual incidents of African folks migrating to Europe and the horrendousness they face on this journey. Two Senegalese teen boys try to make a similar exit to Europe, a place they assume to be the ultimate cauldron of dreams. The boys are dreamy , adventure seeking and naturally ignorant of the ways of the world. Fearing the resistance in their families, they secretly make an exit from Senegal, are misguided and extorted by middlemen and are forced to acquire fake passports. They are accompanied by a crowd of people who are on the same boat and we see some distressing visuals. They cross the harsh Sahara, the arid winds heap sand on the bodies of previous migrants who failed to make it through. The sun is unbearable and things get worse when they come across Libyan rebels who strip them penniless. The two boys get separated and are sent to different prisons. Then there are harrowing details of a torture cell. The skilled prisoners are sold off , the rest are butchered and that’s how the protagonist Seydou makes a narrow escape. He takes up small masonry jobs and somehow reaches Tripoli. After days of enquiry, he finds his cousin Musa who, while making escape from his prison, has been shot in the leg. An injured Musa is evidently hopeless and pleads to be taken back to his home in Senegal. Seydou reinstates his faith and reminds him that if they go back now, all their struggles will be futile. Seydou comes in contact of a petty fishing boat owner who promises to give him the boat on the condition that an inexperienced Seydou will have to sail it. Seydou is scared for he will not just be responsible for his and Musa’s life but an entire throng of people who are desperate to reach Europe. With no other option, an untrained Seydou sets the boat in the Mediterranean. As is obvious in such seemingly inspiring stories, he overcomes all the challenges, saves everyone’s life and reaches the Italian territory. Do you know about those things that are right in every which way but your gut feeling says there's something wrong with them but you can't identify what? Even if the makers are primarily Italians, the story which is natively African still doesn't feel like it has been hijacked and exploited. But, i felt something is off with this film. Or it could be my ever suspicious head. I had to take several breaks while watching the film. Couldn't digest the misery and its inspirational/ verisimilitudinous quality. This film looked like it was made to win international accolades, make the critics rip their shirts off and beat their chests. The climax is a little too dramatised. Seydou offering water to whoever sick felt ridiculous and the film has its obvious reservations at calling this illegal migration although the word illegal doesn't discount the sufferings of the people whose stories are being told. Also, I doubt if the film has employed the correct language and its dialects. Since the story covers so many regions, I am not aware but I am sure there will be certain changes in the language and if not language, then dialect certainly. I am not sure how correctly the film addresses that. The Saharan shots looked extremely unreal, unnaturally colored and almost exoticised. Wasn't convinced.
